Hello, as I type this my mother is in the hospital receiving only minimal 'IV' fluids as the Dr. reasoning is that if she were given the nutrients via IV (she is no longer eating) that it will speed up the cancer. The IV they do have her on has glucose in it. 5% by vol.

Why is their not an IV that consists of proteins and fats and no Carbs?

Thanks

Welcome to the fourm, greggonzo1.

Since your mother want to fight her cancer with metastases, if possible, she should be given IV nutrition (Total Parental Alimentation or TPN) with protein and fat only through a central IV line such as a jugular vein. Giving 5% dextrose is going to help the cancer cells, therefore, avoid any sugar or carbohydrate in the TPN. Based on your description, your mother seems having a very advanced cancer. If this is the last effort in fight back against her cancers, this approach might be worth very much. She would lose nothing. Good luck.Smile

greggonzo1,

If your mother and her physician(s) decide to go along with the idea of TPN with protien and fat without carbohydrate, you may wish to contact

Ainsley M. Malone, MS, RD, LD, CNSD, "The Use of Specialized Enteral Formulas in Pulmonary Disease." at AinsleyM@earthlink.net for advice in designing a TPN formula without carbohydrate.
