[JEV News, March 2, 2012] Epidemiological studies during the recent years have shown a positive link between the consumption of carbohydrates and the initiation, development and metastasis of cancer.
The weekly blog of this website, www.carbohydratescankil.com, published on February 27, 2012, presents the treatment protocol for cancer, in particular, glioblastoma multiforme GBM, reported by Giulio Zuccoli, M.D., Professor Thomas Seyfrid, and their coworkers. In their report, they argue that the best way to halt the progression of cancer is to disrupt its energy metabolism. Cancer cells need glucose and glutamine for survival and proliferation. Thus, reducing the patient’s blood glucose level by restricting carbohydrates and increasing ketone bodies in his circulation by supplying him with ketogenic diet help increase the odd of cancer containment. The treatment protocol includes a case report. Understandably, restricting carbohydrates results in ketogenesis through gluconeogenesis or the production of beta-hydroxybutyrate. Nevertheless, adding medium-chain trglycerides to the diet increases the level of ketone bodies.
In the meantime, the premiere episode of a special series of the Carbohydrates Can Kill Podcast Show on Carbohydrates and Cancer, aired on February 29, 2012, summarizes all the information that illustrates the roles of hyperglycemia in the initiation, development, and metastasis of cancer. Based on the findings of many studies, restricting carbohydrates for cancer prevention and treatment makes good sense.
A properly designed carbohydrate-restricted ketogenic diet is palatable to and easy in compliance by the patient. Both the report by Zuccoli et al and the podcast episode point out that more cancer victims need to give carbohydrate restriction or ketogenic diet a try for the sake of improving their odd of winning the battle against cancer.
